Legitimacy in Vanilla Diablo
*Play Diablo as it was intended.
*No third party software(s).
*No bug(s) abuse (For example the mana shield bug).
*No duping.
*You can play only as many copies as the game you purchased as per the EULA.
*Never use duped or cheated items.
*No trainers.
*No scanners (Not everyone has access to them so its unfair).
*No duping or restoring of items via Multi.SV files.
Legitimacy in Devilution
[Duping & bugs are - to a great extent - fixed in Devilution. There is also an Anti-Cheat system in place]
*Play Devilution as it was intended.
*No third party software(s).
*Never use duped or cheated items, especially from the test build versions.
*No restoration of items via Multi.SV files & no compiling of builds.
Devilution Recommended Settings
[The following settings are recommended in order to not have an unfair advantage]
*Friendly fire on (As per Vanilla).
*Negative shrines on (as per Vanilla).
*Native Resolution 640 x 480 (As per Vanilla).
*Item highlighting on the ground off (As per Vanilla).
*Stash - Used only for items that won't ever be used (Collection).
*Game Speed - Makes the game generally harder for certain activities and easier for others. I choose to play on Normal Speed (As per Vanilla).
*Player health values, monster health bar & experience bar - One could argue that this makes the game easier and so I prefer turning them off but they are very nice features to have activated (As per Vanilla).
*Run in Town - One could argue that this makes shopping easier and so I prefer turning it off.
*Auto-Pick & Auto-Equip Items - An inoffensive setting to have activated in my opinion. I play without it to become better at managing the inventory (As per Vanilla).
Disclaimer On How I Decide To Play:
My interest lies in the accomplishment of my challenges with the added restrictions. Therefore, I play Vanilla as it is much harder and I don't indirectly benefit from fixes that make the gameplay easier.
Key Differences In Terms of Difficulty Between Vanilla Diablo & Devilution:
Currently, Vanilla is much harder but Let's assume you play DevilutionX without any of the QOL Settings (As similar to Vanilla as possible) and you just benefit from the bug fixes.
Vanilla is Harder on the Following Points:
-Block chance bonus is lost when loading a New Game.
-Enemies go through firewall.
-Aspect Ratio makes the game harder.
-The lower framerate makes the game harder.
-You have to click the mouse each times to swing.
-Chain lightning sprites are not uncapped.
-Traps are deadlier because they can possibly hit multiple times on the same tiles.
-No QOL in Vanilla (No item highlighting, high resolution, game speed change, experience bar, health values, auto equip (...)
-Enemies missiles are deadlier in Vanilla because of their slow speed which can trigger two hit checks.
DevilutionX is Harder in That:
-Spell queuing is fixed (Allows to have infinite Apocalypse charges on a staff or infravision).
-Double Cast is fixed (That's a big deal since it affects scrolls, staves and spells)
-Duping in-game is fixed.
-Diagonal walk (Intentional or not) is fixed (Very big deal).
-Four tiling can't be abused (Intentional or not).
-Mana shield now scales as originally intended (It reaches 33% damage reduction at Slvl 7+)
-No mana shield bug abuse with Sorceror.
-Monsters have more HP.
-Nightmare/Hell difficulty Diablo is harder in DevX because his CTH doesn't overflow.
*Obviously, if you play Devilution with all the quality of life (Nothing wrong there), the game becomes easier on many front.
*In the future, several DevilutionX features will be further customizable or edited to be more alike Vanilla which will make it officially harder as a whole compared to Vanilla, especially if you remove the quality of life and play it with settings as similar to Vanilla as possible.
*If you play Vanilla, it is Important to emphasize that a player should follow the rules regarding bug(s) abuse & cheating outlined by Virgil Tibbs many years ago.
