I grew up in what I consider to be the golden age of the Personnal Computer era. Blizzard Entertainment was, in those days, unrivaled in the gaming world with titles such as: Starcraft, Warcraft 2 and Diablo. I remember vividly playing all of them for hundreds of hours, allowing my imagination to roam free and expand the limited frontiers of what each titles had to offer. Of all of them Diablo 1996 was the game that influenced me the most and it was also the first game I was allowed to play on Battle.Net.
The characters, the eerie music, the cinematics, the town, the sounds and the color palette pulled me in a world of dark horrors and occult mysteries that I had never seen before as a child. The simplicity and claustrophobia of the game was actually a source of endless possibilities to me; What lies beyond the rocks surrounding the village of Tristram? What kind of potions and ingredients was stored in the dim-lit shack of Adria? What did King Leoric and the warriors of Khanduras look like before Diablo's awakening?
I was simply haunted and overwhelmed by the game and everytime I would start a new adventure and encounter the Butcher or drop a unique item, I would feel the same excitement, the same adrenaline that I had felt the first time I had played. I knew then that this game would remain my absolute favorite title of all time and that it would grow old with me.
I played Diablo frequently but in a casual fashion in my younger teenage years. It was only when I turned eighteen years old that I started applying a methodology to how I played. I had read online on some old forums that there were many different ways of playing this fabulous game - Legit, Purist, Ironman, Hardcore, Live off the land - I started experimenting with the Legit playstyle. Around the same time, I discovered the online community "Tristr.am" which is now, unfortunately, defunct. There, I met some experienced veterans and fellow passionate players. There were also several guides and events which made playing Diablo a social gathering instead of a lonely adventure (The Battle.Net Servers were quite empty in those days).
Shortly after discovering this community, I became obsessed with the more challenging ways of playing Diablo. The 'Purist' playstyle made me even more addicted to the game and then, I went even further, playing what I called "Purist - Hardcore". I sank hundreds of hours into the game, achieving two characters level 50 without dying once.
With the refinement of the Diablo Port - DevilutionX, I am still playing as obsessively as ever, starting my challenges all over again and participating in friendly "Players Vs Players" bouts and cooperative "Ironman" sessions. I decided to create this website as a tribute to how influential, important and entertaining this game has been for me. It is a small pixelated world but it echoes to some of my happiest moments as a child and I do not plan to ever stop playing it.
